Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer. You will guide or support medium to large size project to developed and review work instruction and verification/validation plans, set-up production lines, and support vendor interaction. You will require close interaction with internal and external manufacturers and the ability to build and maintain strategic business relationships while focusing on the macro perspective regarding technical needs and logistics details of projects. A typical project may include the following types of equipment: particle accelerators, plasmas, and/or charged particle systems; optics: charged particle and/or x-ray; x-ray (synchrotron/FEL) beamline design; magnetic systems: normal conducting, superconducting, and/or permanent magnet; cryogenic systems; vacuum systems.
Manufacturing Engineer (Level 2) Specific Responsibilities:
Coordinate the fabrication of scientific experimental equipment for government-sponsored national research programs and facilities.
Facilitate communication between engineering function, manufacturing, and quality
Implement manufacturing and quality procedures including non-conformance and deviation reporting; oversee engineering change order process.
On a project basis, manage all aspects of procurement and the subsequent material handling/assembly onsite through the full project life cycle.
Serve as the primary resource and coordinator for specific engineering projects for manufacturing procurements, onsite manufacturing, shipping/receiving, and external technical subcontractors.
Help establish performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
Help develop project scope and estimate related logistics (time/cost estimates, assembly/installation timelines).
Provide technical oversight to procurement staff. (E.g., technical aspects of drawings, understanding of technical issues; advice on vendor qualifications, technical details of contract or proposal verbiage).
Explore and validate cost-effective and timely solutions for complex and often technically challenging projects.
Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment.
Investigate potential vendors and make recommendations; be aware of and communicate vendor discrepancies and parts/equipment issues.
Assist projects in establishing appropriate QA/QC plans for specific jobs.
Facilitate material inspection, substitution, standardization, rework, salvage, utilization, and economical procurement of parts and equipment.
Write specifications for technically complex or challenging procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements.
May infrequently travel to vendors and trade shows, as appropriate.
In additional to the above, Manufacturing Engineer (Level 3) Specific Responsibilities:
Provide manufacturing oversight to technical staff assigned to engineering projects.
Responsible for formulating cost and schedule data associated with technical project procurements.
Prepare technical or progress reports with minimal supervision.
Independently analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment, making manufacturing recommendations when necessary.
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar technical degree plus at least 3 years of experience in liaison/coordinator role with procurement staff, or overall equivalent experience
Excellent and effective communication/interpersonal skills, meeting facilitation, organization and detail orientation with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects
Experience reading, understanding, and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings
Knowledge of the technical aspects and considerations of mechanical/manufacturing related items to determine appropriate procurements for various projects
Understanding of the project development process, associated terminology, and quality system requirements
Technical knowledge of manufacturing and assembly practices and processes
Experience in a R&D environment is preferred.
In addition to the above, Manufacturing Engineer (Level 3) Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar technical degree plus at least 5 years of experience in liaison/coordinator role with procurement staff, or overall equivalent experience
Relevant experience in a research or technical environment

This is a 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
